Fitzgerald and Guislain Perfumes First Impressions
I sit with Ian Fitzgerald and Alexander Chesebro of Fitzgerlad and Guislain and discuss their start in all natural perfume making as well we discuss the fragrances in their collection which includes Gerefou, Nuit A L'Opera, Golden Rose and Eucalypcense. The perfumers discuss how they got their start in All Natural Perfume making in Northern California and what it took them to make perfumes, why they wear their uniforms, what inspired or inspires them to create the perfumes they create.
Gerefou is a classic fougère style fragrance similar to the antique fougères of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It opens with a burst of soapy lavender and citrus, supported by the refreshing and herbaceous scent of tarragon absolute. As the fragrance moves into the middle, notes of geranium and lavender absolute create a soothing, floral heart reminiscent of hayfields and wildflowers on a spring day. In the drydown, sandalwood and tonka bean lend warmth to the deep, forest notes of oakmoss and aged patchouli.
Nuit à l’opéra captures the energy of an operatic performance with a combination of bright citrus notes and powdery florals. The top notes of bergamot and pink pepper create a sparkling and energetic opening reminiscent of brut champagne. As the top notes fade, French orris butter takes center stage, introducing a powdery and sophisticated haze of violets, supported by the warmth of jasmine sambac. As the perfume enters the drydown the orris is warmed by softest sandalwood and benzoin.
Golden Rose embodies the scent of a playful garden fountain surrounded by heady rose bushes and shady trees replete with ripe fruits. The opening of Golden Rose focuses in on the fountain with an explosion of watery saffron and fruit notes, both refreshing and utterly intoxicating at the same time. In the heart, the rose comes into full bloom, featuring three different natural rose essences to capture the flower’s rich variety of floral, fruity, green, and spicy notes. Entering into the drydown, a combination of balsam fir and ambrette seed finishes the scent with a delicate botanical musk accord.
Eucalypcense is a dark, spicy, incense fragrance inspired by the iconic eucalyptus groves of the California coast. The fragrance also explores the possibilities of contrasts in perfume—warm and cool, spicy and fresh. Eucalypcense opens with a haunting note of cold eucalyptus, not the astringent essential oil distilled from the leaves of the plant, but a rich and complex absolute extracted from the wood of the tree. A bouquet of exotic spices mingles with the eucalyptus, causing the opening notes to dance effortlessly between hot and cold. In the heart, the spices give way to the luxuriant scents of jasmine and Turkish rose, adding floral depth to the eucalyptus wood. At its base, delicate sandalwood and incense linger on the skin.
