### **Heartbreak, rewritten**

There's a flower that looks exactly like a broken heart. Pink, perfectly heart-shaped, with a single drop hanging from the bottom like it's bleeding.

It's called the bleeding heart, and it comes with a legend. A prince offers a princess gift after gift. She turns him down every time. Heartbroken, he drives a dagger into his own chest, and the flower is all that's left of the story.

[PARFUMS QUARTANA](/brands/1783/parfums-quartana) read that legend and decided to change the ending. In their version, the prince survives. And that is where their new perfume, Bleeding Heart, begins.

We were lucky enough to get our hands on samples, so this week's Fragletter is all about it.

### **Ten years of poisonous flowers**

Bleeding Heart is a birthday present of sorts. It marks ten years of Les Potions Fatales, the collection Joseph Quartana launched in 2016 as the first fragrance line built around the mythology of poisonous flowers. The idea started, of all places, with a Breaking Bad plot involving lily of the valley.

This is the collection's tenth Potion Fatale, created by Joseph Quartana with Symrise perfumer Laure Brysse. And like the flower itself (beautiful, and poisonous if eaten), it plays with the line between danger and sweetness.

The twist this time is the message. The first nine Potions were about poison as a kind of threshold. This one turns heartbreak into self-love: the wearer becomes both the bleeding heart and the one receiving everything it releases.

### **A cathedral good enough to eat**

Before he ever found the flower, Joseph Quartana walked into the Chiesa del Gesù di Casa Professa in Palermo. Its Sicilian Baroque interior, all cream, blush, rose and gold, looked to him like an enormous wedding cake. So he asked himself: what would a slice of this church smell like on skin?

That edible vision became the backbone of Bleeding Heart. The classic Valentine's gifts (roses, strawberries, white chocolate) slotted into it naturally. The brief was ambitious: take drugstore Valentine's clichés and turn them into something couture. This summer, he travelled back to Palermo with the finished perfume and brought it into the church, closing the circle.

### **What's in the bottle**

The notes follow the story, movement by movement.

***Top: the dagger.***
A "Dagger Accord" of rose oxide sharpened with cool [Cardamom](/notes/notes/cardamom) and a flash of [Grapefruit](/notes/notes/grapefruit), plus Madagascar [Cocoa](/notes/notes/cocoa) extract.

***Heart: the gifts.***
[Bulgarian Rose](/notes/notes/bulgarian-rose), [Strawberry](/notes/notes/strawberry) and [Peony](/notes/notes/peony). Flowers, fruit and tenderness.

***Base: the heart's blood.***
[White Chocolate](/notes/notes/white-chocolate) and blonde [Caramel](/notes/notes/caramel), with [Madagascar Vanilla](/notes/notes/madagascar-vanilla) bourbon absolute, [Amberwood](/notes/notes/amberwood) and [White Musks](/notes/notes/white-musks).

White chocolate is the centre of it all. The house says it was the hardest part to get right: an ultra-realistic white chocolate that feels familiar and strange at the same time.

### **Our take**

Bleeding Heart opens bold and unmistakably floral. The rose leads with confidence, and there's a cool, slightly sharp edge to it that reads like the cardamom "dagger" doing its job.

After about an hour, it changes character. The sharpness fades, the florals relax, and it settles into something powdery and sweet, with the creamy side of the composition taking over. What we can say is that this is not a shy scent. It's clearly noticeable on skin.

What stood out most is how well the story comes through once you know it. It smells like a date: a bouquet of flowers and a box of chocolates, dressed up for the evening. The familiar Valentine's combination is all there, but the sweetness arrives as a soft, powdery cloud rather than pure sugar.

### **Who it's for**

Bleeding Heart is a floral gourmand with a story, made for people who like their sweetness with an edge. It's worth a try if you:

- love white chocolate, caramel or vanilla, but want something less straightforward than a classic dessert scent
- enjoy rose and fruit in a softer, creamier setting
- care about the story and artistry behind a fragrance as much as the scent itself

### **Why the house matters**

[PARFUMS QUARTANA](/brands/1783/parfums-quartana) calls itself a house of "Slow Perfumes": nothing is released until it feels finished. And the track record backs it up. Poppy Soma, one of the original Potions Fatales, won The Fragrance Foundation's Perfume Extraordinaire award in 2017, and Ierofante took the Art & Olfaction Independent Category award in 2023. Both were judged blind, with no branding or bottle in sight, which makes Quartana the only house to win two consecutive major blind-judged awards.

### **Where to find it**

### **Your turn**

Have you tried anything from Les Potions Fatales? And how do you feel about white chocolate in perfume: dream note or too sweet to handle?

If you get to try Bleeding Heart, log it in your Scent Calendar and leave a review on Fragplace. We'd love to know how it wears on you.

A big thank you to Joseph Quartana and the Parfums Quartana team for sharing Bleeding Heart with us. It's always a pleasure to discover a perfume with this much story and thought behind it.
